Biking from West Campus

A Guide for Choosing the Right Crossing

Biking from West Village to campus is much easier now thanks to improvements including designated cycle tracks and multiple bike crossings on Hutchison Dr. Which bike crossing is right for you depends on your destination. With the recent addition of an a-frame and other signage, bicyclists now have clear routes.

Getting to the Health Sciences District

  • If you're headed to the Health Sciences District from Hutchison Dr., use the first bike crossing. This crossing is equipped with sensors that detect bicyclists. Wait for the bike signal, then cross safely. This route is perfect for reaching places like the Genome and Biomedical Sciences Facility, Tupper Hall, the Veterinary Medicine Campus, Aggie Stadium, and more.

Getting to Central Campus

  • For central campus destinations from Hutchison Dr., opt for the second bike crossing, but first hit the pedestrian crossing signal. Remote detection is in progress for bikes, but until then, activating this button is a must. Next, queue back in the designated bike crossing location and wait for the pedestrian crossing to light before continuing left (east) on Hutchison toward central campus.
  • Or, avoid Hutchison Dr. altogether by opting to get to central campus by taking the Highway 113 overcrossing to Blue Ridge Rd. — the preferred route for getting to popular campus destinations like the ARC, Memorial Union, Quad and much more. (See overview image below.)

Pedal on with confidence!
