Vanpool Program |
VANPOOLS
Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) assists in forming vanpools but does not administer the Vanpool Program. Vans for vanpools are leased by individuals from local vanpool providers. Personal vehicles, with seating for and with 6 or more riders, also qualify for vanpool designation. TAPS assists in contacting the vanpool providers, vanpool formation, start up subsidizes, recruiting members, parking and emergency rides.
Currently (as of June 1st 2007) Three vanpools bring faculty, staff and students to campus Monday through Friday from the following areas: El Cerrito, North Natomas and Placer County. These vans are privately leased. If you are interested in becoming a member in one of the existing vanpools, or possibly forming one of your own, please contact the Vanpool Coordinator or the TAPS Alternative Transportation Coordinator (ATC) at (530) 752-6453 (MILE) or . Rates and hours are set up by van membership.
Six or more people sharing one vehicle, VAN or SUV, on the majority of their commute trips to campus constitute a vanpool. A Vanpool Application for the entire vanpool must be completed. One member of the vanpool should be designated as the Vanpool Coordinator. This person will be the contact person between the vanpool and TAPS.
Members of a registered vanpool are responsible for knowing and adhering to the following TAPS parking regulations governing participation. Knowing these guidelines will help vanpool members avoid receiving a parking citation on the UC Davis campus. If after reviewing this information, there are further questions regarding the program please call the TAPS Alternative Transportation Coordinator (ATC) directly at (530) 752-6453 (MILE) or send .
Vanpool Parking Permit
The vanpool (GP) parking permit will be assigned to only one member of the vanpool. This individual will not be eligible for any other on-campus parking permit. Other members of the vanpool can purchase regular parking permits if needed. Payment for the GP may be made in the form of a check or money order (made payable to UC Regents) or by monthly payroll deduction. The cost of the permit ($312 for 2005/2006) is split between the members of the van. The GP permit is not transferable to other vehicles owned or operated by members of the vanpool unless permission is granted through the TAPS office. The permit should be clearly displayed on the rearview mirror when the van is parked on campus. Vanpool permits must be purchased for a minimum time of one Quarter.
Daily Pool Parking Permits—DP's
When the vanpool is formed, a three month supply of Daily Pool Parking Permits (DPA), valid in "A" lots will be provided. Additional supplies may be obtained by contacting the TAPS Transportation Coordinator at (530)752-5435 (MILE) or ). Vanpools with undergraduate and graduate student members will be provided with a supply of DPC permits, valid in “C” lots. Distribution of the permits is the responsibility of the Vanpool Coordinator and should be logged out. DP's should only be used by regular/full-time riders on those occasions when they must drive alone to campus. Vanpool coordinators should distribute DP's only as needed. Each seat in the van is allowed two permits per month of participation. On days when there are more riders than seats available, DP's should not be issued. Furthermore, members who can only ride in the van on a part-time or casual basis should purchase a regular parking permit from TAPS. Abuse of DP's will result in a loss of this privilege for the entire van.
Daily Pool Parking Permits are valid for one day only and must be dated and signed in ink. To validate a Daily Pool Parking Permit, "X" out the correct month and day. If a mistake is made on a DPA or DPC, attempts should not be made to correct it, a new one should be filled out. DP's are valid only during the fiscal year they are issued and may not be used in subsequent years.
Individual Daily Pool Parking Permits can be used on campus and UCDMC lots where "A" and/or "C" permits are honored. This permit is NOT VALID in reserved carpool parking spaces on campus or at UCDMC.
Reserved Vanpool Parking
Each vanpool has the option or requesting a reserved parking space in the lot of the pool's choice. This space will be reserved between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Vans may also park in any other non-restricted parking space on campus.
Emergency Ride Home
Enrolled members in vanpools have access to Emergency Ride Home (ERH) services for unexpected emergencies. In the event that an emergency situation develops and other transportation options are not feasible, TAPS will do its best to provide a ride home (or to commute starting point). ERH services are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. However, rides and/or services may not always be immediately available upon request.
Emergency situations include illness, emergencies at home, or childcare problems at daycare or school. Rides are not provided for the following reasons: working overtime, night classes, medical appointments, business travel, job related injuries, personal errands, or natural disasters. Call 752-8277 (TAPS), for more information or to request a ride.
ANY PERSON REQUESTING AN EMERGENCY RIDE HOME WHO IS NOT REGISTERED WITH TAPS WILL NOT BE GRANTED AN EMERGENCY RIDE HOME. Vanpool coordinators should make certain that all riders are registered with TAPS and that any changes in membership are reported immediately.
Participation in the ERH is monitored. Excessive use may result in a denied ride.
Pretax/Payroll Deduction
Eligible employees can elect to have all or a portion of their vanpool fares taken out on a pretax/payroll deduction basis up to $105 per month. These fares are then collected by TAPS and sent to the commercial vanpool company. Enrollees need to complete a Payroll Deduction Authorization Form (available from TAPS). The forms must be returned to TAPS no later than the 5 th of the month prior to the starting month. For example, those wishing to enroll beginning in March need to have their form in the TAPS Office no later than February 5 th . The same is true for cancelling the deduction. A Payroll Deduction Cancellation form is due by the same date frame.
