Central Campus Access
The "Center Core" is defined as that portion of the central campus closed to motorized vehicular traffic by the use of traffic control gates and bollards. The Center Core is considered closed to general traffic, and authorized vehicles may only access the area for heavy loading/unloading purposes and/or when other access options are not feasible. This policy is intended to help reduce the amount of vehicular traffic within the core and minimize the potential of car versus bicyclist/pedestrian accidents. Drivers are responsible for knowing and adhering to all policies and guidelines related to the central campus and accept responsibility for their actions. Citations may be issued to vehicles in violation.
Request for vehicular access to the central campus will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Temporary access (up to 30 minutes for loading/unloading purposes) may be obtained from the North Entry Information Center located on Howard Way, near the north entrance to the central campus. Vehicles must display an appropriate central campus permit, and may not park for longer than the permit allows. Central Campus permits provide parking in unrestricted marked parking spaces located in small parking areas throughout the core area. They do not provide on street parking or access to restricted spaces (Diamond E, Special Permit, etc.). The Center Core should not be used as a short cut to get from one area of the campus to another, or for dropping off passengers.
Vehicular movement in the Center Core is prohibited during class breaks/lockdown. When the gate light is flashing, lockdown is in effect and drivers may not enter the Center Core during this time. Drivers may not pull their vehicle in front of the Gatearm until the light has stopped flashing in the event that emergency vehicles require access. Drivers that are already in the core are required to park along the curb until lockdown has concluded.
Lockdown times are:
Morning: The last 10 minutes of the hour
Midday: 11:50am-12:10pm
Afternoon: The first 10 minutes of the hour
Central Campus parking privileges may be revoked at any time. Below are points to remember when driving/parking in the center core:
- The speed limit is 15MPH
- Be aware of bicycle and pedestrian traffic
- Use caution when entering a traffic circle and always travel in a counter clockwise direction
- Park only in unrestricted marked parking spaces for the time authorized by your permit
- Do not park on the street
- Movement is prohibited during lock down (times above)
